Parton's Deli
Parton's Deli entrance
Before I get to Parton's Deli let me tell you about...
Places in my memory... When I was a young lad growing up in the mountains of Asheville N.C., we lived near the dead-end of a mile long country dirt road named Cowan Cove. I remember on hot summer days, when we were out of school, my four older brothers and I were always looking for things to do, places to go. We didn't have a Play Station or Video games back then. So we used to walk the long dirt road all the way to a little country store. This little place was owned by a little old man named Mr. Hawkins.
Mr. Hawkins seemed at least a hundred years old to me way back then. He had this long solid white beard stained with chewing tabacco down both sides of it. He kinda scared me actually. But he was always the nicest old fella. If we didn't happen to find any bottles along side of the road as we made our journey there, bottles that we could trade for a nickle or two, often he would still give us some little something regardless of our bad luck. A piece of bubble gum. A soda.
I share this little story with you because I want you to understand that since that time in my childhood, little ole country stores have always held a certain lure and charm for me. I guess it is just as much about the journey as it is the destination.
Parton's Deli
I'm trying my best to instill
a love for the simple pleasures of life to my son James.
33 years ago Parton's Deli was "just" a little country store here in Gatlinburg. Over the years I guess it has somewhat "adapted" and is now (In my opinion) the finest deli in Gatlinburg. It offers the best hot dogs in town. I always get their chili Dogs, about 4 to be exact. I also add a few deviled eggs, a soda and chips. My wife Sarah likes the Ham and Cheese Hoggie on Pumperknickle bread. And James? Old Fashioned Root Beer and well...it won't be long before he will be eating more than daddy.
Henry and his son Dennis, doing their magic. If you prefer they also have: Reuben*Salami*Ham*Pastrami*Corned Beef*Bolagna*Roast Beef*Potato Salad*Devil Eggs*Desserts and ohh yeah, Hot Dogs.
All Prices VERY resonable.
Dennis Parton and my son James.Did you say ROOTBEER?!
Yeah I know, just about every restaurant in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area has an autographed picture of Dolly, but not everyone can say that they are cousins. Sarah, James and I love to come here after we have been hiking all morning.
Maybe time does change things a bit...a lot. But if you know where to look and what to look for, a whole world of classic American values and simple pleasures can still be unearthed.
Parton's Deli in Gatlinburg is one of those American classics as far as I'm concerned. And even though it may have "adapted" over the years, it still has every bit of that little ole country store charm and lure. You can find Parton's Deli on North Parkway Gatlinburg across from the Rocky Waters Motor Inn(Days Inn) next door to Hillbilly Golf. Tell'em Barry sent you.
Do you have a favorite place to eat in the area?
Do you have a favorite place to eat in the Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville area? I can't wait to hear where it is and I'm sure other folks would love to be informed on where to eat as well.
It's a very simple process!
