"If I can add one good thing to your trip here, I have accomplished my goal."
China 1 Restaurant is an example of an American dream come true. It is an example of the right way to do things. Hope, hard work, faith and perseverance are a big part of what made America great. Not too long ago I remember when "America" was a word that reverently invoked a feeling among people of other countries that was almost sacred. It was a word filled with hope and longing. A destination in their hearts and minds that perhaps they did not fully understand, yet knew that somehow, someway, they must find a way to arrive at this dream and fulfill it. Make it real. Make it true.
It was not a dream that was to be illegally taken by force, but a cheerished dream to be sought with honor and respect. Tina Heatley (Americanized name) has realized this dream.
Tina Heatley
10 years ago Tina was still a native of Fu Jian China.
Somewhere deep inside she knew that she wanted to seek a new life. So her and a few friends started on a long journey that first carried them to Canada before deciding to come to America. First in New Jersey and then East Tennessee.
She lived first in Knoxville where she met her husband Ronald Heatley. After getting married they new The Great Smoky Mountains offered them exactly what they were looking for. Beauty, peaceful surrondings, moderate climate and a chance to open the China 1 Restaurant in Sevierville.

Large Carved Mural Inside China 1 Depicting a BridgeTina has had more than one bridge to cross on her path to citizenship. Tina had to study and pass the citizenship test. She studied for the test at the Sevier County Adult Learning Program under the tutelage of Connie Mayes. Connie encouraged Tina to take the citizenship test after she met Tina in "English as a Second Language class". Students of this class must display their ability to read and write sentences in English. She also took an "American History" class. "I wanted to know American history and get to understand better the Country I was now calling my own" she said. Tina's Niece Cindy with JamesAfter getting a "Green Card" which takes about 2 years, it takes at least another 3 years to become "naturalized" if you are married to an American and about 5 more years if you are not. Dedication, following the laws of the land and perserverance are factors that come into play. Other things that the "U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services" require are:
Continued residence in one district
The ability to read and write English
Knowledge of American history
Good moral character
Attachment to principles of the U.S. Constitution
Favorable disposition toward the U.S.

Tina's story made the Headlines in the Local Newspaper, The Mountain Press
I can't speak for everyone but when I see what the word America still means to some and that they are still willing to make the necessary sacrifices in the pursuit of what that word means, I am filled with inspiration and determination to never take that word for granted.
Congratulations Tina!
